Griezmann officially joins Orlando after Atletico Madrid exit

Antoine Griezmann has been officially announced as an Orlando City SC player following his exit from Atletico Madrid at the end of last season. 

Griezmann agreed an initial contract to run until the end of the 2027-28 campaign, with the option to extend for a further year, back in March. 

The 35-year-old is expected to take part in his first training session with Orlando next Monday, with the Lions’ first game after the World Cup break coming on July 22. 

Orlando have endured an underwhelming start to their MLS campaign, sitting 12th in the Eastern Conference after 15 matches while they are also without a manager. 

Martin Perelman is in temporary charge following Oscar Pareja’s sacking back in March. No team has conceded more goals than Orlando’s 44 so far this season.

And they will be hoping Griezmann’s experience will help kickstart their season, with the experienced forward having enjoyed a successful career during his time in LaLiga. 

During his two spells with Atletico, Griezmann scored 212 goals and registered 95 assists in all competitions, the most of any player in the club’s storied history. 

Griezmann’s 296 LaLiga goal involvements are the fourth-highest total in the division’s history, with only Karim Benzema (343), Cristiano Ronaldo (398) and Lionel Messi (666) managing more. 

Orlando signed off for the World Cup break with a 6-2 loss to FC Cincinnati, and return to league action against Western Conference high-flyers San Jose Earthquakes next month.
