Green Bay Packers: Adam Stenavich makes strong statement on Savion Williams

· · 3 min read

Offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said Tuesday that receiver Savion Williams is “as talented as guys we have on this team,” two days after Williams’ season debut in the Green Bay Packers‘ 23-13 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Williams missed the first five games on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Green Bay activated him Saturday, the same day it placed receiver and returner Skyy Moore on injured reserve. Receiver Jayden Reed went on injured reserve Sept. 30, according to the team.

The Packers converted nine of 10 third downs in the first half Sunday and two of eight after halftime, by Wisconsin Sports Heroics’ count.

Route running is the piece Williams is still adding.

“Yeah, no, that’s the biggest thing with him,” Stenavich said. “He’s big, he’s athletic, he’s as talented as guys we have on this team. And it’s just for him just learning how to run routes. And that’s been nice. Like you saw that play on the third down. He used his leverage, broke away from the coverage, and made a nice play. And I think we’re going to see a lot more of that from him.”

Coach Matt LaFleur called an early play for Williams at a moment Stenavich did not expect.

“I actually wasn’t expecting him to go to that play at that moment, so that was good,” Stenavich said. “I was excited about that one. I wish we could have got a bigger play out of it, but it was cool to watch.”

Asked about the difference on third down between the first five games and Sunday, Stenavich answered “night and day.” Jordan Love “made some spectacular throws,” he said, and Williams “provided a good spark” at the start of the game.

“But yeah, all our receivers were just going out there and playing hard and getting open and doing a good job,” Stenavich said. “So we ran the ball a few times to get first downs. That always helps on third downs, but yeah, it’s a combination of everyone just going out there and making plays for their team.”

Matthew Golden and Christian Watson dropped three would-be touchdowns between them Sunday, by Wisconsin Sports Heroics’ count. Golden told Love to “keep trusting me” afterward.

“No, no, I’m not concerned just because I know the type of player that he is,” Stenavich said. “It’s again just one of those things that you can’t lose trust in yourself. You got here for a reason. You are the player who you are for a reason. We all trust him. Jordan trusts him. So I know he’s going to make those plays. The ball is going to keep coming his way.”

“So yeah, it’s just one of those things you just got to work through it, trust yourself and keep your confidence,” Stenavich continued.

The Packers play at the Detroit Lions at 3:25 p.m. CT Sunday.
