Godzilla Minus Zero Has A Post-Credits Surprise (But It's Not A Scene)

Godzilla Minus Zero‘s credits don’t finish with a bonus post-credits scene teasing Gojira’s next adventure, but that doesn’t mean you should leave as soon as they start rolling. Picking up two years after Godzilla Minus One‘s ending, Takashi Yamazaki’s sequel turns the Oscar-winning Japanese monster movies into a proper franchise.

As a result, there is an entirely new set of expectations for Godzilla Minus Zero. The 2023 original was not guaranteed to get a sequel, leaving all of Yamazaki’s ideas for where the story could go to happen before the credits began and audiences risked missing any additional setup. But it is much more common for sequels to include credits scenes to promise audiences more movies.

Like its predecessor, Godzilla Minus Zero does not include a post-credits scene of any kind. That is not a sign to leave the theater as soon as the movie wraps up. There is a special audio cue for those who stick around for the whole time.

Why It’s Worth Sticking Through Godzilla Minus Zero’s Credits

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Godzilla Minus Zero!At the very end of Godzilla Minus Zero‘s credits, there is audio of Godzilla stomping through rubble several times, followed by one final roar. This is the same way that Godzilla Minus One‘s credits ended, using the audio as a final tease for audiences rather than using a proper after-credits scene.

The meaning of Godzilla Minus Zero‘s post-credits audio has multiple interpretations. It is not used on every Toho Godzilla movie, so this could have become Yamazaki’s signature way to finish his entries. However, since Godzilla is still alive and free at the end of Godzilla Minus Zero, it could also be argued that this is a tease that more destructive encounters between humans and Gojira will come.

Even before the final Godzilla Minus Zero audio surprise, the credits are worth sticking around for. Naoki Satō’s incredibly epic score plays throughout the entire thing, so the credits become a final chance to experience his great music. Furthermore, it is also an opportunity to appreciate everyone who worked so hard to make Godzilla Minus Zero a reality.

Godzilla Minus Zero’s Post-Credits Scene Choice Fits The Wider Franchise

The audio-only tease may be a bit disappointing for anyone hoping for a proper post-credits scene setting up a third film, but it is par for the course with this franchise. Godzilla Minus One didn’t have one either. More broadly speaking, Godzilla movies rarely implement using Hollywood’s franchise-expanding tool.

Across the 40 Godzilla movies released between Toho and American studios, only a handful have post-credits scenes. The last was 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. You have to go back to 2003’s Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. to find a live-action Toho production that included a proper post-credits scene. Otherwise, Toho’s animated trilogy of Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, and Godzilla: The Planet Eater all had one.

Godzilla fans have not been conditioned to expect credits scenes in the monster’s movies. It is traditional for these films to let their endings be where the story ends. This forces the films to include any sequel setup before the credits roll and lessens the possibility of teasing fans with stories that may not happen.

Does Godzilla Minus Zero Set Up A Sequel?

Even without a traditional post-credits scene, Godzilla Minus Zero still leaves the door open for this franchise to continue if Yamazaki wants to make a third. The movie ends with Kōichi, Noriko, and Akiko going on the run, Kanji becoming a captive of the United States, and Godzilla heading back into the ocean after killing the powerful King Ghidorah.

All of those threads could be expanded upon in a Godzilla Minus Zero sequel. But none have made it so a third film is mandatory to ensure Yamazaki’s take on the kaiju goes unfinished. After all, Godzilla Minus Zero was promoted as the franchise’s end by Toho.

Producer Kazuaki Kishida previously discussed Godzilla Minus Zero‘s sequel chances with ScreenRant at New York Comic Con, saying, “So this was true from Minus One to Minus Zero as well, but while we’re working on any one Godzilla film, we don’t think about any other film but the one we’re working on. Because we have no idea what’s going to happen with it.”

Only time will tell if the story continues beyond Godzilla Minus Zero, but the post-credits audio is a clever way of hinting at Godzilla being involved in more destruction, even if we never see it.
