Glasgow 2026: Team Nigeria secures second spot on day one medal table

Team Nigeria made an impressive start at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, winning six medals on the opening day, DAILY POST reports.

The West Africans currently occupy second position in the medal standings, with three gold, and three silver

Australia finished day one at the top of the medal table.

Team Nigeria’s six medals came in the para powerlifting event.

50-year-old Roland Ezuruike set the tone for the medal haul by claiming silver in the Men’s Lightweight with a lift of 185kg

Esther Nworgu won Nigeria’s first gold with a new games record in the Women’s Lightweight, lifting 123kg

Nworgu’s compatriot Esther Onyema took the silver in the same category with a lift of 125kg.

The biggest performance of the day came from Folashade Oluwafemiayo, who won gold in the Women’s Heavyweight with a new world record 175kg.

Rita Ferdinand came second, equalling the previous world record with a lift of 158kg.

Riluwan Idris won Team Nigeria’s third gold medal in the Men’s Heavyweight with a lift of 208kg.
