XX-XY Athletics founder Jennifer Sey reacted to fans of the Golden State Valkyries verbally attacking her as she sat in attendance for their WNBA Finals Game 1 win against the Atlanta Dream.

Sey has been a part of WNBA discourse all summer, sharing strong support for Sophie Cunningham’s take against trans athletes competing in women’s sports. Sey has been a part of pro-Cunningham protests, with her XX-XY Athletics brand becoming a core part of the movement as well.

Sey attended the Game 1 clash between the Dream and Valkyries to keep advocating against trans athletes in women’s sports, decked out in XX-XY Athletics gear, but was verbally attacked by fans.

After the video she shared of fans cursing at her as she was told off by arena security for wearing antagonising clothing, Sey captioned another video with fans cursing at her with her honest reaction to the incident.

“I gotta say I’m glad I left SF. These people are mean. I’m having PTSD from being chased down the street during COVID and people telling me they hoped my kids would die. I went to a basketball game and wore a shirt.”

Sey’s XX-XY Athletics is already a heavily political brand, as it actively works against the interests of trans rights by excluding them from competing against biological women.

With most WNBA fans being big allies of the trans movement, it’s unsurprising to see them be upset at Sey walking into what they consider a safe space to advocate for principles that oppose their moral compass.

While Sey likely wanted to generate a reaction with her appearance, her feelings of being scared in that environment are valid given the things fans were saying directly to her face as she was walking up the arena.

With the spotlight on the WNBA Finals and other public figures looking to attend games to push their ideas, which go against what most WNBA fans and players stand for, more rough fan interactions are likely to take place over the remaining games.
