The San Francisco Giants are struggling significantly this season, and the results have been extremely disappointing. The club is now led by new manager Tony Vitello.

Last year, the Giants moved on from Bob Melvin after missing the playoffs. San Francisco president of baseball operations Buster Posey described the season as disappointing.

“After careful evaluation, we determined that making a change in leadership was in the best interest of the team,” said Posey. “The last couple of months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not perform up to our standards. We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward.”

So far this season, the results have not improved. As June progresses, San Francisco’s postseason chances continue to look bleak.

“Even the most optimistic Giants fan should start coming to grips with the fact that his favorite team might be left out of the postseason for the fifth consecutive year. According to FanGraphs, the Giants have a 2.6% chance of playing baseball in October, the second-lowest odds in the National League. With 90 games left on the schedule, according to Tankathon, the Giants have the 18th-hardest remaining schedule, with a .496 opponents’ winning percentage,” Around the Foghorn’s Nathan Hirschi wrote.

With the season trending in the wrong direction, attention has already shifted toward the trade deadline. San Francisco is expected to be active in exploring moves involving some of its biggest names.

“The Giants are open to offers for their three highest-paid position players — Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, Matt Chapman — among other obvious trade candidates, like Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray,” ESPN’s Buster Olney wrote.

Adames, Devers, and Chapman remain core pieces of the roster, but they could also bring back significant returns in potential trades. However, moving them would strongly indicate the beginning of a retool or rebuild.

The trio of Adames, Devers, and Chapman collectively accounts for $646 million in contracts. While no team wants to move on from that level of investment, the Giants’ current standing makes difficult decisions necessary. Sitting 14 games below .500 with little momentum, San Francisco may ultimately find that selling high on key players is the most logical path forward.
