Giants’ quarterback search raises a Tanner McKee question for Eagles

With the news that the NFL is digesting Jaxson Dart’s injury, John Harbaugh says the Giants are in the market for a quarterback, with Jameis Winston taking over as their starter. That search raises a question for the Eagles: Would New York ask about Tanner McKee?

No report says the Giants have contacted Philadelphia or even expressed interest in McKee. He is a plausible player to examine because the Eagles carry Jalen Hurts, Andy Dalton, McKee, and rookie Cole Payton in a crowded quarterback room. McKee has NFL experience, while Winston’s presence would let New York add a quarterback and have a viable mentor available.

The obstacle is the division. Philadelphia would have to decide whether any offer justified giving a quarterback it knows well to a team it plays twice a year. The Eagles also have their own reason to keep depth behind Hurts. McKee was designated their emergency third quarterback in Week 2, but that game-day role does not make him expendable over a full season. The Giants could instead sign an available veteran or look outside the NFC East. Harbaugh’s statement that “all options are open” establishes a search, not a trade discussion with Philadelphia.

For now, McKee belongs on a list of quarterbacks New York could evaluate. Whether the Giants would call — and what it would take for the Eagles to listen — remains unanswered.
