The San Francisco Giants finally had a reason to celebrate on Friday night.

Rafael Devers delivered a walk-off double in the bottom of the 10th to beat the San Diego Padres, 7-6.

But for spread bettors who had the Giants minus-1.5, it was actually a horrific bad beat.

That’s because Devers’ double was a ground-rule double, one that bounced over the fence, and it came with the bases loaded.

So that’s two runs, right? 

Shouldn’t he get two RBI? Shouldn’t the Giants have won 8-6?

Yeah, normally, except that Luis Arraez didn’t make that happen.

A runner on a ground-rule double who is on second base is awarded home, but he still has to go touch it for the run to count.

In this case, Arraez saw the lead runner touch home to win the game, so he himself turned off to go celebrate. He never touched home.

Thus, 7-6 instead of 8-6:

Obviously, the Giants aren’t going to care. They won.

It’s just one of those quirks — one that also impacts Devers’ stats ever so slightly, too. There’s no reason for San Francisco to worry about it, but there were surely a few folks who felt the pain of this near-miss.
