The San Francisco Giants lost 3-1 in their series finale against the Detroit Tigers. While they’re now 49-69 on the season, starting pitcher Logan Webb still found a silver lining.
Webb had the opportunity to pitch in front of former teammate Justin Verlander, who is now a member of the Tigers. With Verlander set to retire after the season, Webb was honored to be on mound with the future Hall of Famer in attendance, via Justice delos Santos.
“I missed about two warm-up pitches because I was clapping. He’s one of the greatest pitchers of all-time,” Webb said. “I was lucky enough to be around him for a year. I wish I could’ve spent 10 years with him as my teammate. I have a friend for life and a mentor for life.”

Webb made sure to put on a show for Verlander, throwing eight innings of one-run baseball, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out two. It may not have resulted in a win, but Webb’s efficiency surely had to impress Verlander.
The veteran’s one season in San Francisco saw him put up a 3.85 ERA and a 137/52 K/BB ratio over his 29 starts. But beyond his work on the mound, it’s clear Verlander made a strong impression on Webb and the Giants at large.
Seeing as Verlander played 21 years in MLB, it’s fair to assume Webb isn’t the only player or pitcher that has been inspired by the three-time Cy Young winner. But on Sunday, the current Giants ace was able to pay his respect both on the mound and with his words for a person who clearly means a lot to him.
