Giants bury Angels early, cruise to lopsided win

SAN FRANCISCO — The Angels never had a chance to make this one interesting.

San Francisco jumped on Ryan Johnson early, scoring nine runs over the first four innings and putting the game away well before the seventh-inning stretch, cruising to a 9-2 win over Los Angeles at Oracle Park on Saturday.

Johnson didn’t make it out of the fourth. The right-hander was tagged for eight runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings, and the Giants’ third-inning uprising did the real damage. Jung Hoo Lee blew it open with a two-out, three-run homer, to make it 5-0. Logan O’Hoppe tried to salvage something out of the frame with an ABS challenge on a strikeout call, but the review only confirmed the Angels were out of the inning.

San Francisco wasn’t finished. Devers added a three-run homer, his 22nd, in the fourth to push the lead to 9-0 and chase Johnson from the game for good. Brent Suter and Kirby Yates combined to keep the Angels quiet in relief, and by the time Los Angeles got the ball back to its lineup, the game had already been decided.

Robbie Ray made sure of that. The right-hander cruised through six innings without allowing an earned run, scattering six hits and striking out five to improve to 9-6 on the season. Los Angeles didn’t get a runner past second base against him.

The Angels didn’t get on the board until the seventh, and even that took some work. Jose Siri walked, moved into scoring position on a Logan O’Hoppe single and a Zach Neto hit-by-pitch, and scored on a Mike Trout double play that also ended the inning. By then, Los Angeles had already gone to a double switch, inserting Wade Meckler, Oswald Peraza and Josh Lowe in an attempt to reshuffle the lineup.

Things only got more lopsided from there. With the bullpen thin from the blowout, Los Angeles turned to catcher Tyler Heineman to pitch the eighth inning, and he retired the side in order. The Angels tacked on one more run in the ninth on a Vaughn Grissom walk that scored Siri, but it did little to change the final margin.

Devers finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs, and Jung Hoo Lee added two hits and three RBIs of his own as San Francisco piled up 11 hits and got length from Ray at the top of the rotation. Siri had two hits and scored twice for the Angels.

Los Angeles will look to salvage the series finale Sunday, when Jose Soriano takes the mound against Carson Whisenhunt, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. PT at Oracle Park.
