Giannis Antetokounmpo emerges as target in high-risk Blazers trade strategy

· · 2 min read

One team is reportedly willing to take an aggressive gamble in the race for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Portland Trail Blazers are said to be open to trading for the Milwaukee Bucks superstar even without any promise that he would agree to an extension, showing a bold approach in the ongoing pursuit of the two-time MVP.

Shams Charania reported on FOX Sports Radio’s “Stugotz and Company” that the Trail Blazers could be ready to put together a strong package centered on multiple rotation players and a future first-round selection in order to chase the Greek Freak. Charania noted that Portland may pursue the deal regardless of the uncertainty involved, signaling a willingness to accept the risk required to land the Bucks star.

The expectation around the league is that Antetokounmpo could eventually steer his destination by leveraging his 2027 free agency, potentially discouraging teams he does not prefer. Even so, the Portland Trail Blazers appear prepared to take an aggressive approach, showing interest in pursuing the Bucks star even without any commitment that he would agree to an extension after a trade.

The Blazers also have reasons to feel optimistic about their chances. The team has built a promising young core that unexpectedly reached the playoffs this season, and they are also set to welcome back franchise star Damian Lillard next year.

Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo previously shared the court during their time with the Bucks, where they developed a strong on-court connection and mutual respect that could factor into Portland’s appeal.

It is also possible this latest information is being floated out of the Milwaukee camp as a way to strengthen their negotiating position and raise the value of potential trade offers.

Giannis is currently under contract for $58.5 million next season as the former NBA MVP continues his run with the  Bucks. However, he will retain flexibility beyond that, as he can enter free agency afterward by declining his $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season.
