The georgia-bulldogs/3473/" target="_blank">Georgia Bulldogs have made a stand against the Texas Tech Red Raiders after a Texas appellate court ruled Texas Tech starting quarterback Brendan Sorsby eligible to play in 2026. Georgia’s athletic department leaders have instructed teams to boycott any future games against the Red Raiders, according to a document obtained by ESPN.
“I think there needs to be serious conversations about not playing Texas Tech any sports,” athletic director Josh Brooks said about the matter. “This is not about Texas Tech — it’s about protecting our own locker room. We cannot in good conscience put our student-athletes on a field where the competitive integrity of the contest is compromised and overridden by the courts.
The ban came after Sorsby was controversially reinstated to play college football again. Sorsby, a rising senior who transferred to Texas Tech, had his eligibility revoked after an investigation found that he had placed more than 1,000 bets on multiple sporting events, including those he played in.
Sorsby wagered over $6,000 on other college football games, placing over $90,000 in bets in total, and he even admitted to the wrongdoing. However, Judge Ken Curry of the 99th District Court of Lubbock County granted the Texas Tech quarterback a temporary injunction, making him eligible to play this season. Sorsby was given a light two-game suspension.
Multiple coaches and executives have voiced their frustration with the situation, with AD Brooks vocalizing his thoughts on X. “True integrity means holding your program accountable when things go wrong, not buying custom legislation or running to a local courtroom to bypass the rules,” Brooks posted.
Georgia hasn’t played Texas Tech in football since Sept. 21, 1996, when the Bulldogs won 15-12. The Bulldogs are 3-0 in matchups against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Georgia men’s basketball has never faced Texas Tech, and their women’s basketball team has faced the Red Raiders just once; an 80-68 win on Dec. 14, 1984. Their baseball team hasn’t played Texas Tech in its history, and their softball team lost to the Red Raiders 5-2 on Feb. 15, 2020 in their only matchup.
