DeChambeau, who won the 2024 U.S. Open as captain of LIV’s Crushers GC team, ascended from quirky talent to worldwide star while playing for LIV. However, that was largely a result of his non-LIV exploits — his massively popular YouTube channel, his ongoing narratives with other golf influencers, and his never-dull majors performances. While playing in golf’s greatest tournaments, DeChambeau did everything from defeat Rory McIlroy head-to-head in Pinehurst in 2024 to embroil himself in a spectacular rules controversy at this season’s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

DeChambeau is a thrilling, infuriating, and always watchable player, which made him one of LIV’s most notable assets. He preached the gospel of team golf right up to Sunday’s statement: “I still believe in team golf. It may look different in the future, but I still believe it’s essential to growing the game.”

He also seemed to concede that his public image has broken containment: “Arnold Palmer always said no player is bigger than the game, and I want to acknowledge that,” DeChambeau said. “I’ve said some things that didn’t help. Whatever comes next, I’ll approach it with humility and respect for the people who carried this game long before me.”

That would seem to be an “acknowledgement” that he’s going to have to accept responsibility for past actions — which include filing suit against the PGA Tour in LIV’s earliest days — before he’ll be allowed back onto the world’s marquee tour … if he is at all.

DeChambeau’s next move is a mystery. He could opt to follow fellow LIV star Jon Rahm to the DP World Tour for a year. He could opt to play only in the majors — he’s exempted into all for through 2029, and the U.S. Open through 2034 — and play YouTube golf. He could attempt to beseech his way back onto the PGA Tour the way Brooks Koepka did, although that pathway appears extremely unlikely. He’s next slated to tee up at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa next month.
