Gary Neville believes Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Leeds United on Sunday is a positive stride in the right direction.
United were on course for victory after Bryan Mbeumo put them ahead in the 35th minute.
The 27-year-old had failed to hit the target with a free header but quickly made amends by battling past James Justin to fire home Youri Tieleman’s excellent pass.
Leeds came out much improved after the break and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the equaliser in the 51st minute.
Both teams had chances to win the game but neither could find the decisive finish as the points were shared.
The latest result at Elland Road has extended United’s winless run to six matches in all competitions.
But Neville views it as a positive stride in the right direction.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the match, he said: [There’s] a depressed standard and a low expectation right now. But it’ll feel like a stepping stone for Michael Carrick, and it’ll feel like the first step on the ladder in the Premier League.
“They may take some confidence from that, and there might be a blueprint there, maybe we have to bring Matheus Cunha, Marcus Rashford and others off the bench, and we might just have to have a go at being more solid.”
Carrick impressed during his interim spell to land a two-year deal at Man United.
But things have not gone to plan since, as the club have won just one of their seven games to sit 13th in the Premier League table.
Carrick’s tactical tweaks made United more compact and defensively solid, but they were forced to settle for a draw after Calvert-Lewin’s equaliser.
The Red Devils will look to end their disappointing run when they face Como in the Champions League on Wednesday.
