James Garner could miss the start of the season for Everton after having successful surgery for a groin issue.

The problem was identified during pre-season, with reports suggesting Garner will be sidelined for a month – Everton’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace is on August 22.

Garner played in all 38 top-flight matches last season, playing 3,414 minutes, more than any other outfield player.

He was a key figure for David Moyes’ side, who came close to clinching a European berth – Garner registered seven assists from 56 chances created, both team-high figures.

The midfielder also topped the charts for touches (2,654), passes (1,793), successful passes (1,564), interceptions (59), possession won (154), tackles (120) and successful tackles (71).

Garner played more minutes than any other Premier League midfielder, with his number of interceptions, tackles and tackles won more than any other player in his position.

In their statement, Everton said “a return to first-team training [is] being targeted around the opening week of the Premier League season, subject to his continued recovery.”

If he is not fit for their opener against Palace, it would be a blow to Everton, who also announced Idrissa Gana Gueye has left the club.

Gueye represented Everton across two spells, with his most recent beginning in September 2022.

In total, he made 236 appearances across both spells, scoring 10 goals.
