Game Thread: No. 19 Michigan Football vs UTEP

Michigan enters Week 3 with some legitimate momentum after knocking off No. 11 Oklahoma, 17-10, last weekend. After needing a last-second touchdown to survive Western Michigan in the opener, the Wolverines responded with a much more complete performance against the Sooners, particularly on defense.

Jay Hill’s defense has surrendered just one touchdown through two games, while Bryce Underwood took a noticeable step forward against Oklahoma after Michigan made greater use of his ability as a runner. The sophomore quarterback enters Saturday with a team-high 134 rushing yards on the season.

But if Michigan learned anything from its Week 1 scare against the Broncos, it’s that no opponent can be taken for granted. UTEP is coming off an impressive response of its own, rebounding from an ugly 51-0 season-opening loss to Oklahoma with a 51-10 win over Texas Southern last weekend. Quarterback EJ Colson Jr. powered the turnaround with five total touchdowns, including four through the air.

Still, this is a game Michigan should be able to use to continue ironing out some of its offensive issues before Big Ten play begins next week against Iowa.

Michigan found a formula that worked against Oklahoma by leaning more heavily on Underwood’s legs, but the Wolverines are still searching for their first truly complete offensive performance of the season. With Big Ten play beginning next week against Iowa, Saturday provides one final opportunity for Underwood and the offense to establish some consistency before the competition ramps back up.
