EXCLUSIVE: Channing Tatum’s Gambit is coming with some complicated origins in Avengers: Doomsday.
Having originally been set for a solo movie tied to Fox’s X-Men franchise, Tatum made his debut as the iconic mutant character in Deadpool & Wolverine, living in The Void and helping the eponymous heroes fight Cassandra Nova and her crew to escape. Surviving Alioth’s sweep through the area, it was later confirmed Tatum would be back for Avengers: Doomsday, though plot details for his return have remained slim.
Now, in an interview with ScreenRant‘s Liam Crowley in honor of the launch of the Avengers: Doomsday special menu at Dunkin’ Donuts, which is now available, Tatum was asked for clarification on which universe his Gambit originates from. The star began by cautioning that “I don’t want to give that away” in order to keep excitement alive going into the multiversal epic crossover.
Channing Tatum: Even where he came from in Deadpool & Wolverine, like you’re saying, he hasn’t been anywhere, in a way, and he was born in The Void, in a way. It doesn’t go into it is what I would say. We start in such a place that we never really get to address where he’s come from.

Gambit isn’t the only character from the MCU’s recent Multiverse Saga who found their origins come into question among audiences. With Deadpool & Wolverine, in particular, Dafne Keen’s return as Laura/X-23 left many wondering if she was the same iteration as her acclaimed debut in Logan, or a different multiverse variant put in The Void by the Time Variance Authority, as were Jennifer Garner’s Elektra from Ben Affleck’s Daredevil and Wesley Snipes’ Blade from his own trilogy.
Closer to Keen, though, was the fact that, prior to Tatum, Gambit actually had a history in Fox’s X-Men franchise with Origins: Wolverine, in which the mutant was played by Taylor Kitsch. The spinoff’s lackluster reception did lead to most subsequent films retconning its entire existence, particularly Ryan Reynolds’ first Deadpool movie and after X-Men: Days of Future Past reset the franchise’s present-day timeline.
That being said, the fact that Tatum teases there being an element of “gray” around his and his fellow X-Men characters’ source universe does tap into a few key theories surrounding Avengers: Doomsday. The trailers have teased that Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is creating incursions in a multiversal war, particularly for Earth-10005, the designation for Fox’s X-Men universe, and thus potentially making him and Mystique the only survivors of it.

On the other hand, the MCU’s Multiverse Saga has previously established there being mutant-related universes with loose connections to Earth-616, also dubbed the Sacred Timeline. The Marvels‘ post-credits scene featured Lashana Lynch’s Maria Rambeau appearing as Binary and Kelsey Grammer returning as an alternate version of Beast, while Stewart previously returned as the Earth-838 version of Professor X for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ Illuminati.
As such, there is still a very real chance that Avengers: Doomsday establishes Tatum’s Gambit as being from a different universe altogether. This would further help clarify the planned changes in the accent for the character, and allow for a smoother passing of the torch between Tatum and a potential new star for Marvel’s X-Men reboot movie.
The Dunkin’ Avengers: Doomsday lineup is available at participating restaurants nationwide starting Nov. 4, featuring beverages, treats, and limited-edition collectibles inspired by the film’s heroes and villains.
