Harvard maintains global lead

At the international level, Harvard University topped the July 2026 Webometrics ranking, maintaining its position ahead of Stanford University.

The United States dominated the upper end of the table, with seven American universities featuring among the 10 highest-ranked institutions.

The global top 10 were:

  1. Harvard University — United States

  2. Stanford University — United States

  3. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) — United States

  4. University of Oxford — United Kingdom

  5. University of Washington — United States

  6. Cornell University — United States

  7. University of Michigan — United States

  8. University of California, Berkeley — United States

  9. Johns Hopkins University — United States

  10. Columbia University — United States

The strong showing by American universities highlights their dominance in the ranking’s assessment of online visibility, accessibility of academic information and research presence.

Harvard occupied the number one position, with Stanford following in second place. MIT completed the top five alongside Oxford and the University of Washington.

Among other countries, the United Kingdom was represented by Oxford in the global top 10, while the University of Toronto emerged as Canada’s highest-ranked institution at 12th globally.

For Nigeria, the July 2026 results place the University of Ibadan at the forefront of the country’s universities, followed by UNILAG and the University of Nigeria. Despite leading the national table, however, UI’s position of 1,291 globally shows that Nigerian institutions still have considerable ground to cover to break into the world’s top 1,000 in this particular ranking.
