Florida State has taken on a new tradition since Mike Norvell became head coach. Every player and coach signs the rock, and after a big win, offseason workouts, or the completion of a camp, a player is selected to break that rock as a symbol of the hard work and dedication it took to achieve a certain goal.
This honor was given to safety Ashlynd Barker at the end of summer workouts in July. On Saturday, FSU wrapped up fall camp with a “mock game” inside of Doak Campbell Stadium. At the conclusion, strength and conditioning coach Josh Storms bestowed the honor upon quarterback Ashton Daniels, stating that he’s earned the right to break the rock by grinding day in and day out since arriving in Tallahassee.
“Man, I’m excited to do this s— with y’all, let’s f—ing get it, love y’all boys,” Daniels said before breaking the rock.
Daniels will be the starter for Florida State in 2026, something many people scoffed at seeing as he was given that distinction rather quickly. However, Daniels consistently showed that he was ahead of 2025 signee Kevin Sperry and stamped himself as the guy for Seminoles.
The experience that Daniels has from playing with the Stanford Cardinal and Auburn Tigers will serve him well going up against ACC competition in 2026. He ended last season on a high note despite losing his final two starts at Auburn as he threw for 353 yards and two touchdowns and added 89 yards and the ground and two more scores versus Vanderbilt. In the season finale against the Alabama Crimson Tide, he threw for 259 yards and a touchdown with one interception plus he gained 108 yards rushing.
He has the talent and he’s a good fit for what FSU wants to do offensively. Now, Daniels just has to show and prove once the season kicks off next Saturday against the New Mexico State Aggies.
