Nov. 7—FREEDOM, Wis. — Northwestern football pushed on Friday, but Freedom pushed back with a vengeance in Level 3 of the WIAA Division 4 state football playoffs on Friday night.
After a goal-line stand on the 1-yard line, Freedom scored 42 straight points and rolled to a 42-6 victory.
After Tysen Teal was not given the end zone, the Irish went around left end and got into Northwestern territory on the first play. Less than three minutes later, Axzil Eggert scored from short range untouched.
Eggert had another short TD run on Freedom’s next drive, and after Northwestern threw an interception on fourth-and-long, Eggert made it three scores on a 50-yard rumble with multiple broken tackles.
In the last minute of the half, Eggert showed off another facet of his athleticism by throwing a pass to Jayden Rueckl for a short TD and a 28-0 lead.
Eggert took another direct snap early in the third quarter and ran with it this time, dragging several defenders to the end zone in a 15-yard play. According to the
broadcast, Eggert finished with more than 230 rushing yards to go with his four rushing and one passing touchdown.
Mason Chell scored a consolation touchdown for the Tigers on a 1-yard dive midway through the fourth quarter.
After the Irish hosted a team from 320 miles away, they’ll host Little Chute (eight miles) in a state semifinal next weekend.
Northwestern’s season ends with an 11-1 record.
