Former Pro Bowl running back attempting a comeback with Seahawks
Former Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon could be on pace for an NFL comeback.
In the offseason, Mixon was released following the trade of Pro Bowl running back David Montgomery from Detroit. He had one year remaining on his three-year, $27 million extension, signed in 2024 after being traded to Houston from Cincinnati.
Senior ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler has reported that Mixon will work out for the Seattle Seahawks this afternoon.
Mixon missed all of last season after the Texans kept saying he was dealing with a “foot issue” but never provided any further context. The Texans didn’t have much of a run game last year, even though they had brought in Nick Chubb, who was expected to take on a heavy workload but appeared to have lost a step. He has since retired from the NFL. Woody Marks was the featured back in Houston last year.
Mixon, a 2017 second-round pick out of Oklahoma, rushed for 1,016 yards in 2024 with Houston, becoming the first 1,000-yard rusher since Carlos Hyde in 2019 and earning his second Pro Bowl selection.
Before becoming a Texan, Mixon spent his first seven seasons with the Bengals, rushing for 1,000 or more yards four times and earning Pro Bowl honors in 2021. He was also Cincinnati’s lead back in its 2021 Super Bowl appearance against the Los Angeles Rams in a losing effort.
