A former Spartans linebacker turned fullback has been waived by his new team in the NFL.
Former Spartans linebacker Ben VanSumeren has been waived by the Buffalo Bills and did not make their initial 53-man roster out of training camp. He signed with the Bills during the offseason and was expected to play a role on their roster this upcoming season.
VanSumeren entered the NFL as a linebacker, playing his first two seasons with the Eagles on the defensive side of the ball. He appeared in 20 games across his first two years with the Eagles, helping them win a Super Bowl in 2025.
Last year, VanSumeren switched to offense as a fullback. His season, though, was cut short on the first play of the new year. He suffered a season-ending injury on the opening kickoff of the 2025 NFL season, which ultimately ended up being his final play with the Eagles.
VanSumeren played two seasons with the Spartans from 2021 to 2022, appearing in 24 games. He started his career at rival Michigan but transferred to Michigan State ahead of the 2021 season.
