Former FSU kicker earns spot on USA TODAY Sports all-decade team

Roberto Aguayo’s place among the most accomplished kickers in college football history earned another recognition this week. USA TODAY Sports‘ Paul Myerberg, Eddie Timanus and Craig Meyer unveiled an all-2000s college football team Wednesday, selecting the best players from the first 25 seasons of the century.

Aguayo was chosen as the first-team kicker, making the former Florida State star one of the specialists on a lineup filled with Heisman Trophy winners, College Football Hall of Famers and future NFL stars. The selections were determined through voting by more than 10 USA TODAY Sports writers and editors.

His résumé in Tallahassee made a strong argument for inclusion. Aguayo scored 405 points from 2013-15, converted all 198 of his extra-point attempts and made 69 of 78 field goals. He also finished his FSU career without missing a field goal from inside 40 yards. USA TODAY Sports highlighted that consistency while naming him the top kicker of the century so far.

Aguayo made an immediate impact during Florida State’s undefeated national championship season in 2013. As a redshirt freshman, he won the Lou Groza Award as the nation’s top kicker after making 21 of 22 field goals and all 94 extra points. His 157 points established an NCAA single-season record for points by a kicker, a mark that still stands atop the record books.

He followed that season by connecting on 27 of 30 field goals in 2014, earning consensus All-America honors, before making another 21 field goals during his final season in 2015. Aguayo finished his college career with a 96.73% combined conversion rate on field goals and extra points, which remains the NCAA career record among players meeting the qualifying minimum.

More than a decade after his final game in garnet and gold, Aguayo’s three-year run at Florida State continues to stand among the best the position has produced, and USA TODAY Sports now considers it the standard for college kickers this century.
