Former Cowboys QB Tony Romo disqualified from golf tournament over scorecard errors

· · 1 min read

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was disqualified from a Korn Ferry Tour qualifying tournament in Oklahoma after signing a scorecard that listed lower scores than he had recorded, according to GOLF.com.

Romo, 46, played in a 54-hole pre-qualifying tournament earlier this month at the Club at Forest Ridge in Broken Arrow. He appeared to finish with rounds of 76, 75 and 74, missing advancement to the next stage by three strokes.

Tournament officials later found discrepancies on his scorecard from the final round, played Oct. 2. A South Central PGA official who monitored Romo’s group recalled him making bogeys on his 16th and 17th holes. But Romo’s signed scorecard listed pars on both holes, GOLF.com reported.

Under the Rules of Golf, a player who signs a scorecard with a score lower than the one actually recorded is disqualified if the error is not corrected within the permitted time.

Rob Keller, a PGA Tour rules official overseeing the event, told GOLF.com he interviewed Romo’s playing partners and spoke with the former quarterback about the discrepancies.

Keller said Romo accepted responsibility for signing the incorrect scorecard and praised the tournament’s organization. Even without the disqualification, Romo would not have advanced.

Romo’s disqualification came the same day CBS announced he was leaving its NFL broadcast team after nine years. He joined the network as its lead NFL analyst in 2017, after playing his entire 13-year NFL career with Dallas.

Since retiring from football, Romo has pursued competitive golf, including appearances in PGA Tour events and qualifying tournaments.
