Former Chelsea and Atletico defender Luis named Monaco head coach

Monaco have appointed former Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Brazil full-back Filipe Luis as their new head coach, following his departure from Flamengo.

Luis, who won 44 caps for Brazil between 2009 and 2019 and won league titles with both Chelsea (in 2014-15) and Atletico (in 2013-14) was sacked by Flamengo in March.

His exit came, remarkably, in the wake of an 8-0 win for the Rio de Janeiro giants, against Madureira in the second leg of a Campeonato Carioca semi-final tie.

Luis began his coaching career with Flamengo’s under-20s before stepping up to the senior job in September 2024, leading them to their fourth Copa Libertadores crown in 2025 as they beat fellow Brazilian side Palmeiras in the final.

Flamengo won 64 of their 108 games under Luis in all competitions, drawing 25 and only losing 19, for a 59.2% win rate.

Now, he will make his first step into European management after signing a two-year contract with Monaco, who sacked Sebastien Pocognoli in June.

Pocognoli was only in the job for eight months, but he failed to deliver Champions League qualification as Monaco finished seventh in Ligue 1, seven points adrift of the top three.

Luis will have a chance to lead Monaco in the Conference League, as they will be part of the play-off round in August, alongside the likes of Atalanta, Freiburg, Brighton and Hove Albion and Getafe.
