Former 8th overall pick in MLB Draft announces sudden retirement from baseball at age 23

Just a few years ago, Benny Montgomery looked like one of the brightest young prospects in baseball. Now, at only 23 years old, his professional baseball journey has come to an unexpected end. Montgomery, the eighth overall selection in the 2021 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies, has announced his retirement from professional baseball, bringing a surprising close to a career that once carried enormous expectations.

From High School Star to First-Round Pick

Before hearing his name called on MLB draft night, Montgomery was considered one of the premier high school talents in the country. He ranked as the nation’s top outfield prospect after batting .423 while collecting 18 extra-base hits, including a Mid-Penn-leading seven home runs. He also scored 45 runs and drove in 22.

His combination of speed, power, defense, arm strength, and athleticism made him a coveted five-tool prospect. The Rockies believed enough in that potential to make him the eighth overall pick and signed him away from a commitment to the University of Virginia with a reported $5 million bonus.

Injuries and Inconsistency Changed the Story

Unfortunately, Montgomery’s professional career never gained the momentum many expected. A series of injuries repeatedly interrupted his development, making it difficult for him to stay on the field and establish consistency.

Even when healthy, sustained offensive production proved elusive. This season with Double-A Hartford, Montgomery appeared in 41 games and hit .203 with seven home runs, 19 runs scored, and 22 RBIs. While flashes of his talent remained evident, the results never fully matched the immense expectations that followed him into professional baseball.

Not the First Rockies Prospect to Walk Away

Montgomery’s decision is unusual, but it is not without precedent in Colorado’s organization. Former Rockies first-round pick Riley Pint, the fourth overall selection in the 2016 draft, also stepped away from baseball early after struggling to translate his tremendous raw talent into consistent professional success.

For Montgomery, the decision marks the end of a baseball career that began with tremendous promise but was ultimately derailed by injuries and adversity. At just 23 years old, however, he has plenty of time to begin the next chapter of his life away from the diamond.
