Matt Damon has spent decades proving that he can carry just about any kind of movie. He can lead a globe-trotting spy franchise, play a stranded astronaut millions of miles from home, portray a real-life racing legend’s rival, or step into the boots of a mythological hero in one of the year’s biggest cinematic spectacles. Few Hollywood stars have enjoyed such a varied career while remaining a reliable box-office draw.
His latest epic adventure is an impressive reminder of just how far he’s traveled from his early days as a screenwriter and aspiring actor. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey gives Damon a leading role in an ambitious adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem, complete with mythical monsters, perilous battles, and a journey home that makes most road trips look like a quick supermarket run.
Yet bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better, and Damon’s most memorable performance doesn’t require an army of extras, spectacular set pieces, or an entire Greek mythology textbook. His best film is a much more intimate story about a troubled young man whose extraordinary talent is the least complicated part of him.
Released in 1997, Good Will Hunting helped establish Damon as a major Hollywood talent and earned him an Academy Award alongside his best friend. It perfectly showcases what makes him such a compelling actor and is currently free to watch on YouTube.
Good Will Hunting Remains The Perfect Matt Damon Movie
At its heart, Gus Van Sant’s Good Will Hunting is a character drama about a working-class Boston maintenance worker with a staggering gift for mathematics. Will Hunting, played by Damon, can solve problems that stump MIT’s finest minds, but he has little interest in turning his intellect into an academic career. He’d rather spend his time drinking with his South Boston mates, getting into fights, and avoiding any situation that might force him to confront his potential.
When Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgård) discovers Will’s talent, he arranges for him to receive therapy from Sean Maguire, played by Robin Williams. Their sessions become the film’s emotional center, as Sean gradually challenges Will’s defensive humor and deep-rooted fear of vulnerability. Meanwhile, Will’s relationship with Skylar (Minnie Driver) forces him to consider whether he can let somebody into his life without sabotaging the opportunity.
Damon and Ben Affleck wrote the screenplay together, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, while Williams won Best Supporting Actor. Damon gives Will a prickly charm that prevents him from becoming a simplistic genius type. He’s brilliant, but he’s also insecure, cruel when cornered, and terrified of being rejected. His rapid-fire banter can make him the smartest person in the room, but it also functions as armor.
Good Will Hunting‘s most moving moments emerge when that armor finally cracks, particularly in his scenes with Sean. Damon’s performance makes Will’s emotional growth feel hard-won rather than inevitable. For all its talk of mathematical genius, Good Will Hunting understands that the hardest problems aren’t always the ones you can solve on a blackboard.
Matt Damon’s Career Has Transformed Since Good Will Hunting

The fascinating thing about Good Will Hunting is how little it resembles the films that would come to define Damon’s career. After establishing himself as a writer and dramatic lead, he became one of Hollywood’s most dependable action stars, headlining the Bourne franchise as an amnesiac operative and proving his blockbuster credentials in Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s films.
Damon’s later roles have included General Leslie Groves in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. These flaunt Damon’s versatility and highlight how unusual Will Hunting is within his filmography.
Damon now frequently plays capable professionals who can navigate extraordinary situations. Will, on the other hand, has no interest in becoming a hero. His biggest obstacle is his own conviction that letting people close will inevitably lead to pain. That contrast makes Good Will Hunting particularly valuable as a reminder of what Damon can do without spectacle.
That’s why the Good Will Hunting drama remains such a compelling counterpoint to The Odyssey. Damon’s career has grown more spectacular, but his early masterpiece still demonstrates that his greatest strength is making audiences believe in a flawed person who must finally decide whether he’s willing to change.
