‘Football is beyond logic’ – Allegri rues Napoli collapse against Inter

Massimiliano Allegri claimed “football is beyond logic” after Napoli’s dramatic 3-2 loss to Inter and urged his team to keep improving.

Napoli had taken a 2-0 lead at San Siro thanks to Matteo Politano and Rasmus Hojlund, but Inter’s late turnaround saw them leave empty-handed.

Lautaro Martinez scored a brace, with his second goal coming in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, after Marcus Thuram had pulled Inter level shortly before.

As such, Napoli lost a Serie A match after being two goals ahead for only the second time in their history; the first occasion was on March 22, 1942 against Torino (3-5).

It is also the first time Napoli have recorded two consecutive defeats in the league for the first time since December 2023; in both runs, one of the two games was against Inter.

While Allegri conceded it was an exciting game for the neutral, he would rather Napoli had avoided such an entertaining match.

“It was hugely entertaining for the spectators and for Inter, but a bit less enjoyable for us,” Allegri told DAZN Italia.

“The goal for 2-1 was too easy for them, then they stepped up a gear because they have that in them and caused us problems. We thought the ball was out of play and stopped on the cross, but this is football.

“We could’ve scored the winner, so could they; in the end, they did, and that won the game.

“This is proof that football is beyond logic. We wanted to defend inside the area and then conceded a goal like that.”

Napoli had 16 shots against Inter, with seven of those on target, but they also had 29 attempts peppered on their goal as the hosts stepped up the pressure after going behind.

Despite it still being so early in the season, after back-to-back losses against Como and Inter, Napoli are already six points adrift of the latter in the Serie A standings.

“We need to improve. The performance was good, and we expected Inter to start strong, but we had favourable situations even then that we didn’t take,” Allegri added.

“Inter suddenly sparked into life when they were 2-0 down; they are a very good team. Our performance against Como was good too, but we are paying a heavy price for errors and need to limit or avoid those.

“This team’s fitness levels will improve; it’s a pity about this moment, but now we turn our focus to the Champions League on Wednesday.”
