Florida set to host top prospect Beckham Black for official visit

In the midst of Florida football beginning its season this Saturday in the Swamp, the men’s basketball program is planning to host one of the top-ranked prospects in the class of 2027, guard Beckham Black, the same weekend.

Along with Black, it was also reported that he will be joined by 2028 small forward Colton Hiller.

Black is a 6-foot-3-inch, 180-pound point guard who transferred from Duncanville (Texas) to play for Southeastern Prep (Florida) and is the younger brother of Orlando Magic guard Anthony Black. 

As one of the top two players in his recruiting class, the five-star point guard has garnered interest from many programs. After visiting the Swamp this weekend, he’ll travel back to his home state of Texas to visit the Longhorns program on Sept. 9. 

“Black is one (of) the highest floor point guard prospects we’ve seen in several years. He has a uniquely wide overlap of assets with positional size, innate competitiveness, poise, confidence, consistently developing skill, and an instinctive feel for the game. He can not only blend scoring and passing, but tailor them to his environment,” Director of Scouting Adam Finkelstein stated.

“In the EYBL, he operated as an offensive alpha and posted 22 points, 5+ assists, and 4 rebounds per game on 48/35/82 shooting. Conversely, he ran the show as a pure point guard for USA Basketball at the FIBA U17 World Cup, averaging 12 points and 8 assists, against just 1 turnover.”

With key departures exiting the UF program after next season, it is imperative that the Gators reload their roster. Currently, the Gators are expected to lose seniors Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, Rueben Chinyelu, Urban Klavzar and Denzel Aberdeen. Todd Golden’s program also does not have a player committed in either the 2027 or 2028 cycles.

As the program expects to lose a significant amount of talent, Golden should turn to evaluating high-level amateur talent, which is something the men’s basketball program has shied away from.

Black is ranked No. 2 overall and No. 1 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite, while the Rivals industry ranking has him at Nos. 6 and 1, respectively. On ESPN, Black is ranked the No. 1 overall player in the country.

Rivals’ recruiting prediction machine puts Texas in the lead, with the Longhorns holding a 27.9% chance to land him. Florida (24.5%), Georgetown (20.5%), SMU (6.6%), and Duke (1.1%) fill out his projected top five teams.
