Barcelona manager Hansi Flick was pleased with much of his side’s display in their 5-2 victory over Rayo Vallecano, but the German was clear that the result did not hide an area he wants his team to improve.

Barça produced an impressive first-half performance and responded well after conceding, putting themselves in a commanding position.

Yet Flick felt they lost some control after moving 3-1 ahead, particularly given they were playing at home.

“We played fantastically in the first half. 0-1 can happen, but the reaction was good,” he said.

Flick wants greater control from Barcelona

The manager’s biggest concern was Barcelona’s ability to dictate matches once they establish an advantage.

Flick believes the quality within his squad should allow them to keep the ball for longer and manage dangerous moments more effectively.

“When you’re 3-1 up, you have to control the game better, especially at home. We have the quality to have more possession,” Flick explained.

That is where Rodri’s importance becomes particularly clear. Barcelona brought the midfielder in to add control and authority in possession, and Flick expects him to help the team manage exactly these situations.

“That’s what he’s here for – to help us maintain control. To improve the team.

“Rayo are a good side with quick players. We need to learn to handle those situations better,” he added.

Flick also confirmed his satisfaction with Gabriel Jesus joining the squad, describing the Brazilian as a high-level forward capable of offering Barcelona another attacking option.

“For me, Gabriel Jesus is a top striker. I’m very happy he’s here. He can bring a lot to the team.”

Raphinha and Lamine Yamal provide further positives

There were plenty of individual positives for Flick, too. Raphinha again showed why he has been entrusted with the captaincy, while Lamine Yamal marked the occasion with two goals.

Asked whether he expected such a performance from Raphinha, Flick highlighted the Brazilian’s mentality and his return to top form.

“He’s our captain; he has a positive attitude. We know how good he is. I’m delighted he’s performing at this level after last season.”

Flick was equally pleased to see Yamal find the net twice, although his comments also revealed that the youngster had been surprised to get the opportunity.

“Yes. Seeing him score two goals is something that makes me happy too.”

Furthermore, there were also some words reserved for new signing Anthony Gordon, who provided an assist, with the manager stating,

“He’s very quick and has good ball control. He’s provided two assists today.

“Having him, Karim, Rapha and Lamine… gives us a lot of pace. I’m very pleased with him.”

Lastly, Flick also appeared to close the door on further transfer activity for now when asked whether Barcelona should expect more arrivals.

“New signings? I don’t think so… but we’ll see.”
