Bruised and battered, the Carolina Hurricanes met their first loss in seven games against the Calgary Flames – missing key pieces of their lineup in the second half of their back-to-back weekend set. The Flames took the game with a 3-2 win, ironically mirroring the same score the Hurricanes had in their win against the Winnipeg Jets just the day before.

Entering Sunday night’s contest, Carolina was not just missing Jordan Staal and Taylor Hall, but it was also Mark Jankowski – who had centered Staal’s third line – due to a lower-body injury. Following the game, head coach Rod Brind’Amour further discussed that Jankowski had been shipped back to Raleigh to have his injury checked out.

The game honestly played out very similarly to the one against the Jets Saturday, with the first period ending in a 0-0 tie, and the second period ending in a 2-2 tie, with the third period having the singular goal – the game-winner.

In the second frame, Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored first on a slick wrist shot with help from Nicolas Deslauriers and Eric Robinson in a shift that their line was determined to find twine on.

The final 90 seconds of the frame, however, was pretty crazy, with a trio of goals being scored.

First came a goal for the Flames from Matvei Gridin, fresh off the bench, with just 1:30 left in the frame. Then, after an unfortunate delay of game penalty to the Hurricanes after Mike Reilly was penalized for sending the puck over the glass, Morgan Frost took the lead for the Flames just one minute and nine seconds after they first got on the board.

But nonetheless, with only four seconds remaining in the frame, Jalen Chatfieldscored his first goal of the season to even things up in Carolina’s favor.

Ultimately, the only goal of the third frame was for the Flames – courtesy of Yegor Sharangovich – but the Hurricanes weren’t ready to give up, nearly scoring in the waning seconds of the game with the extra attacker on the ice, but just couldn’t break through to send it to overtime.

Hurricanes Notes

During the game, Jackson Blake seemed to have been shaken up after a hit from Yan Kuznetsov, resulting in some time on the bench being assisted by head athletic trainer Donnie Fuller. The good news is that he did return to play, finishing the rest of the game without any noticeable issue.

This was the final time that the Hurricanes played in the Scotiabank Saddledome, as the Flames will be moving to a new arena next season.
