Argentina and Spain will meet on Sunday in the World Cup final. The winner gets one of the most iconic trophies in all of sports. And if that wasn’t enough, FIFA is going to give the players championship rings to commemorate the occasion. In total, 2,026 rings will be produced.
So it is possible for someone born in America or England to actually get a hold of one of these.

Championship rings are having a moment. Earlier this week another batch of MLB players received rings just for participating in the midsummer classic.

Obviously, the World Cup is the kind of thing that deserves a ring. It’s the absolute height of the sport. The fact that baseball has been giving out rings to players who were involved in an exhibition game seems like a loss for ring culture. I mean, it’s a literal participation trophy.
If anything this makes the World Cup rings more important. You’re not devaluing championship rings by creating more. You’re making a higher percentage of the rings truly matter. With the expansion of the World Cup field, this also makes it harder to win a ring. Only 13 countries were invited to the first World Cup. That number has more than doubled and there’s talk that it could grow even larger by 2030.
FIFA should go back and have rings made for all the previous champions. Then they could present them to all the surviving champions ahead of the next World Cup to celebrate the centennial tournament. You could probably pay for all the rings with a single hydration break. Or with whatever obscene profit comes from selling the other 1,996 rings that will be made this year.
