FG Unveils Nigeria’s First Manu-Tech UniPod to Drive Innovation, Manufacturing, Job Creation

The Federal Government has inaugurated Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia State, marking a major step towards strengthening innovation, manufacturing, entrepreneurship, and industrial development in the country.

The pioneering project is a collaborative initiative involving the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, and the Abia State Government.

Representing Vice President Kashim Shettima at the inauguration, the Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, said the establishment of the Manu-Tech UniPod underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to transforming Nigerian universities into centres of innovation, entrepreneurship, research commercialisation, and sustainable job creation.

According to the minister, universities must evolve beyond their traditional roles of teaching and research to become catalysts for enterprise development, technology transfer, and industrial competitiveness. He noted that the initiative aligns with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to build a $1 trillion Nigerian economy by 2030 through innovation-driven growth and economic diversification.

Governor Alex Otti described the decision to locate the country’s first Manu-Tech UniPod in Abia State as a vote of confidence in the state’s growing reputation as a centre for manufacturing, industrialisation, and economic prosperity. He said the facility would further position the state as a strategic hub for innovation and enterprise in the region.

Speaking at the event, Ahunna Eziakonwa, the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, described the Innovation Pod as a platform designed to unlock the creativity, ingenuity, and innovative capacity of Africa’s youth, enabling them to develop solutions that address pressing socio-economic challenges.

Also speaking, Elsie Attafuah, Resident Representative of the UNDP in Nigeria, said the initiative complements the organisation’s broader vision of building Africa’s largest innovation ecosystem by supporting startups, technology-driven enterprises, and high-growth ventures across the continent.

The Vice-Chancellor of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Ursula Akanwa, described the inauguration as a landmark achievement for the institution. She said the facility would significantly strengthen the university’s mandate in science, technology, manufacturing, research, innovation, and enterprise development.

The inauguration of the Manu-Tech UniPod is expected to provide students, researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs with access to cutting-edge facilities, fostering collaboration between academia and industry while accelerating technology commercialisation, skills development, and employment opportunities in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector.
