Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has faulted opposition parties for politicising the October 2026 Cadre Harmonisé food security assessment.

In a statement on Monday, Kyari said the report is being used as a political campaign tool, describing it as a disservice to Nigerians facing real hardship.

“The Cadre Harmonisé is a technical early-warning system developed by the Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel, CILSS, in collaboration with partners such as the FAO, WFP, UNICEF and the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, IPC,” he explained.

The Minister dismissed claims by opposition parties linking the projected figure of 33.5 million Nigerians expected to face severe food and nutrition insecurity between June and August 2027 to President Bola Tinubu’s possible re-election bid.

He described the claims as false and politically motivated, noting that the projection is seasonal and covers the lean period.

He added that the figure actually represents a slight improvement compared to the 2026 projection of 34.8 million.

While acknowledging that food insecurity remains a serious national challenge, Kyari said progress in addressing it will not be immediate.

“The government will continue to use findings from the Cadre Harmonisé to guide interventions, support farmers and ensure access to safe, nutritious and affordable food for Nigerians,” he assured.
