Torres and Spain lifted the World Cup at MetLife Stadium after defeating Argentina. During the trophy ceremony, Trump handed all Spanish players their winners’ medals and the World Cup trophy.

A day later, during the World Cup parade in Spain, Torres was seen wearing a red ‘Make Spain Great Again’ cap, a reference to Donald Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ campaign slogan.

In an interview with CNN, Ferran Torres was asked about wearing the ‘Make Spain Great Again’ cap during the national team’s victory parade.

Torres suggested that it was just a ‘fun’ thing for him to do, and his actions had no political messaging behind them because he didn’t know much about politics.

Torres’ cap became a significant talking point in the aftermath of the FIFA World Cup, with some believing that he was taking a dig at Donald Trump, while others suggested he was paying homage to the sitting US President.

For ardent football fans, Trump seemingly exercising this much control over the biggest tournament in the sport did not sit right.

And given the recent controversy surrounding FIFA President Gianni Infantino, they believe that his influence has extended beyond the scope of the tournament.
