Father of former UNC QB hired as Myers Park head football coach

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (CAROLINA SPORTS LIVE) — Myers Park High School is hiring the father of a former UNC quarterback as its next head coach

It’s not anyone in the Maye family, but Duke Howell who is taking the reins of the Mustangs’ program, the school announced Friday. Howell is the father of Cowboys QB Sam Howell, who starred at Sun Valley High School in Union County and was a three-year starter for Mack Brown at UNC from 2019 to 2021.

“Coach Howell is a veteran coach with a great coaching resume,” the MP football team posted on social media. “We believe he will be a great asset to our program.” 

The elder Howell was the head coach at another Union County school, Cuthbertson. The Cavaliers went 3-8 a year ago in the Southern Carolina 6A/7A conference, but had winning records the two previous years.

Howell takes over following the departure of Chris James last month. James spent three years leading Myers Park, guiding them to a 20-13 record, after serving as an assistant there prior to that.
