Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: An exciting rookie hitter in Colorado highlights players to add this weekend

There is something for everyone on the fantasy baseball waiver wire right now, as we may finally have a new closer to go along with the usual array of starting pitcher options. There is also an exciting rookie hitter in Colorado who needs a massive boost in roster rate.

Cole Carrigg, OF, Rockies, 34%: Carrigg has been tremendous at the dish since arriving to the majors, posting a .925 OPS over 28 games. His power output (4 HR, 21 RBI) has been unexpected, and there is room for growth in the steals department, as Carrigg has swiped just two bases after compiling 30 swipes in 57 games in Triple-A this season. The youngster is also more appealing by virtue of the improvements of a Rockies offense that has gone from multiple seasons as a doormat to ranking sixth in runs scored. The outfield position has been disappointing overall this season, which is another reason that Carrigg should be rostered in 70% of Yahoo leagues.

Garrett Mitchell, OF, Brewers, 21%: Mitchell has improved his quality of contact to the point where he can be started in all five-outfielder leagues. The lefty batter has posted elite marks in average exit velocity (93.0 mph) and barrel rate (15.4%) this season, both of which represent huge improvements from his career mark. And although Mitchell continues to strike out too often (33.2%), he is reaching base regularly thanks to an outstanding 11.7% walk rate. His expected stats are similar to his actual marks, and with an .823 OPS, he has been one of the Brewers better hitters. Mitchell has also made improvements against same-sided hurlers (.738 OPS), which will help him stay in the lineup this summer. Although his roster rate shouldn’t reach 50%, he has earned a jump of 15-20%.

Kody Clemens, 1B/2B/OF, Twins, 48%: Speaking of players who crush the baseball, Clemens is hitting the ball every bit as hard as Mitchell (92.8 mph average exit velocity, 13.1% barrel rate). And an improved strikeout rate (22.3%) has helped him post a career-best .252 average. Clemens started the season slowly but since May 1 he has hit .269 with 13 homers and an .861 OPS. With three eligible positions, he is the perfect utility player for fantasy managers who need to add a slugger to their lineup.

Jake Bennett, SP, Red Sox, 47%: This is my last chance to write about Bennett, who will surely be rostered in the majority of Yahoo leagues when we come out of the All-Star break. The rookie has been tremendous in eight starts with Boston (2.64 ERA, 0.94 WHIP), and his most recent start was arguably his best one, when he tossed seven shutout innings in a win over the White Sox. A control artist (1.5 BB/9 rate), Bennett has allowed a total of five runs across his past five starts.

Jared Jones, SP, Pirates, 25%: After missing all of the 2025 season, Jones can be forgiven for posting inconsistent results when he initially returned from a season-opening injured list stint on May 29. But the hard-throwing righty has been much more consistent of late, and last time out he took a major step forward when he struck out eight Braves while allowing nary a baserunner over six innings. The Pirates are taking things slowly with Jones, which will make him more of a five-inning starter than someone who works deep into games, but he is the most talented pitcher who has a roster rate under 40%.

Tyler Wells, SP/RP, Orioles, 17%: Baltimore closer Ryan Helsley is getting a second opinion on his elbow injury, which is almost always the sign on a long-term absence. After posting respectable numbers over multiple seasons as a starter, Wells has thrived in the bullpen by logging a 3.09 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 45:10 K:BB ratio. He has recently been rewarded for his good work by being used in high-leverage roles, which has resulted in a win and two saves over the past week. We haven’t seen many closers emerge in recent weeks, which means that in category leagues there are likely several teams that should take a chance on Wells.

Josh Bell, 1B, Twins, 24%: The switch-hitting Bell has been a mainstay in a surprisingly effective Twins lineup, and he currently ranks 16th in the majors with 60 RBI. The slugger could drive in plenty of runs this weekend when Minnesota faces three beatable starters and an Angels bullpen that ranks 25th in baseball with a 4.66 ERA. All three starters will throw from the right side, which has been Bell’s preference this season and throughout his career.

Trent Grisham, OF, Yankees, 46%: Grisham returned from the IL on July 3, and although he has not matched his breakout 2025 campaign, the left-handed slugger can still do plenty of damage against righties from his perch atop the Yankees lineup. New York will face three right-handed starters this weekend, including two (Zack Littell, Miles Mikolas) who allow their share of homers. Grisham could also thrive late in games against a Washington bullpen that ranks 27th in baseball with a 5.04 ERA.
