Fans give their verdicts as Lionel Messi’s final international fixture confirmed

Lionel Messi is set to play one final game for the Argentina national team on October 6 after confirming his retirement.

Messi, who took his country to the 2026 World Cup final and lost to Spain, announced he would be stepping away from the international stage at the very end of August.

There was then much speculation about a potential farewell game, but it has now been confirmed that he will play one last match against Benin at the Monumental, in Buenos Aires on October 6 during the upcoming international break.

Fabrizio Romano was among those to share the news, and many fans have since reacted to his post about Messi’s last match to have their say.

One wrote: “The greatest chapter in Argentina’s history deserves the greatest goodbye.”

Ahead of his final game for Argentina, Messi has 125 international goals to his name, the second most behind Cristiano Ronaldo (146).

He also played a key role in Argentina winning the 2022 World Cup as well as the Copa America in 2021 and 2024.
