Fans get rally towels at Hurricanes watch parties to keep Lenovo Center 'the loudest house' in NHL

Towels twirling is a regular sight during Carolina Hurricanes games and watch parties as the team makes its Stanley Cup Final run.

Free rally towels are given to fans at the Lenovo Center during playoff games and at watch parties. Fans at the Red Hat Amphitheater watch party on Thursday also got one.

Canes Art Director Ashley Mason says there’s a different design for every game and about 20,000 towels are ordered for each one.

She says the goal is always the same.

“How do we make this the loudest house?” said Mason. “This year, we’ve definitely tried to keep the atmosphere up because it does seem like the team plays better when the fans are really going.”

“It’s a small part to a fan’s experience on a game day, but it’s a big tool to express their emotion,” said Canes part-time graphic designer Nicholas Oeter.

Small Business Capitalize

Small businesses are getting in on the Canes craze.

House of Swank Owner Jon Pugh is making merchandise especially for the run.

“One of our customers texted me like three in the morning or four in the morning, and she’s like ‘You gotta do this thing for me,'” said Pugh.

He whipped up a new design first thing Friday morning and online orders went live by noon.

“We all know there’s basketball played here. Yes, there’s other stuff that played here, but it was truly a hockey town so here we go,” said Pugh.
