Family seeks closure of son's betting accounts over alleged addiction
A family in Jalingo, Taraba State, has appealed to football betting companies operating in Ardo-Kola and Jalingo local government councils of the state to immediately suspend or permanently close the betting accounts of a young man, Paul Nwunuji Matudi, over concerns about his gambling addiction.
The appeal was contained in a letter dated October 30, 2026, addressed to the management of football betting companies by Abraham Nwunuji Matudi, who identified himself as the young man’s family representative.
In the letter, Abraham expressed concern that his younger brother’s alleged excessive involvement in sports betting was causing financial and emotional distress to the family.
“The situation is affecting Paul’s ability to concentrate on his education and exercise control over his betting activities,” the family explained.
Consequently, the family called on betting operators to take immediate action by suspending, freezing or permanently blocking the affected account to prevent further gambling activities.
The appeal also urged betting companies to fulfil their responsible gambling obligations, particularly where a customer may be under the age of 18 or displaying signs of compulsive gambling behaviour.
“We will not accept responsibility for any financial losses or other consequences arising from continued betting activities after the formal request for account closure,” the family stated.
Abraham also appealed to any betting company that receives the letter to share it with other betting outlets and operators within the area to ensure that the request reaches all relevant platforms.
The family expressed hope that the betting companies would cooperate and provide confirmation once the accounts are disabled.
The appeal follows growing concerns about the potential impact of excessive sports betting on young Nigerians, especially as it affects their financial stability and family relationships.
