Fall Camp Notebook: Updates From Tigers’ Aug. 19 Practice

Fall camp has reached its final stretch in Columbia, and the Tigers held their last practice session open to the media on the outdoor fields Wednesday morning.

Here’s what we noticed from the first five periods of the practice:

  • The final period of practice open to the media consisted of 1-v-1 drills between receivers and defensive backs. Donovan Olugbode made a nice back shoulder catch on a throw from Austin Simmons, and Naeshaun Montgomery also had a solid contested grab.

  • Freshman cornerback Jaxson Gates and Michigan safety transfer Elijah Dotson stood out on the defensive end, both recording pass break ups.

  • But the drill finished on a sour note as freshman wide receiver Jabari Brady fell to the turf after making a spectacular grab. He was looked at by trainers and helped off the field with an apparent leg injury.

  • We’ll likely receive an update on Brady’s status Saturday, when Eli Drinkwitz will have a press conference after the team’s scrimmage. The three-star recruit is not expected to play a major role for Mizzou this season but has shown some promise during fall camp.

  • The practice began with a pair of two-point attempts, and the offense went 1-for-2 on conversions.

  • Wide receivers and cornerbacks also practiced running with the ball and closing the gap, respectively, in open space. The drill wasn’t live, so there was no tackling; the focus seemed to be more on moving in space and finding the right angles.

  • Speaking of receivers, Montgomery has been getting some reps with the ones when either Olugbode or Cayden Lee are not on the field, and the Florida transfer is likely to be one of the first receiver options off the bench alongside Shaun Terry II.

  • The first five periods of practice had a heavy special teams emphasis, with the punt and kick returners getting a lot of work.

  • DaMarion Fowlkes, Lee, Montgomery, Olugbode, Terry and running back Preston Hatfield all practiced receiving punts off a machine.

  • Hatfield was also featured in a drill where they practiced receiving and returning kickoffs. The freshman running back increasingly looks like he could make an impact on special teams this season.
