F1 Doubles Down: 2027 Calendar Adds 10 Sprint Races Including Monaco

The need for greed. Formula just can’t seem to help itself, announcing more racing in 2027 including a second race at what is unanimously known as the worst track of the year.

Formula 1 and the FIA have confirmed the 2027 FIA Formula One World Championship calendar, a 24-round schedule spanning 22 countries and five continents, with the number of Sprint events climbing from six to 10. The World Motor Sport Council approved the calendar, which, according to Formula 1, supports its long-term sustainability goals through a more efficient geographical flow of events.

Pre-season testing runs in Bahrain from February 24–27 before the championship opens at the same venue, followed by Saudi Arabia. The season then heads to Australia, Japan, and China, before Miami and Canada. The European leg brings Formula 1 back to Portugal in June, following Monaco, while Türkiye rejoins the calendar in October between Azerbaijan and Singapore. The closing stretch runs through Austin, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, and Las Vegas, with Qatar and Abu Dhabi hosting the final two rounds.

The expanded Sprint program is the headline change. Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco, and Abu Dhabi will host Sprint events for the first time, meaning Monte Carlo’s narrow streets will now stage two qualifying sessions across the weekend. Montreal, Silverstone, Monza, Sao Paulo, and Lusail, however, retain their Sprint slots.

F1 tied the increase to viewership and attendance data collected since the format debuted in 2021. According to Formula 1, total viewership of Sprint weekends runs 12 percent higher than non-Sprint weekends, and Sprint Qualifying is up to three times more popular with fans than Free Practice. Furthermore, the series says 82 percent of attendees at Sprint weekends report it adds value to their ticket, while 75 percent of fans believe Sprint events add greater value to a season’s calendar.

“We are thrilled to welcome Portugal and Türkiye to the championship and to expand Sprint racing to ten events, giving our fans even more intensity, drama, and the wheel-to-wheel action that make our sport so special,” said Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, meanwhile, framed the schedule as evidence of the sport’s reach. “With 24 Grands Prix across five continents, the return of Portugal and Türkiye, and the opportunity for an expanded Sprint programme, the calendar combines tradition, innovation, and fan engagement while maintaining the highest sporting standards,” he said.
