The game against York was a perfect start to the 2026/2027 season. Class weather, a regiment of the red and white army and a strong display on the pitch. As one of the many that travelled, it turned out to be a great day and really got me looking forward to the games to come.
Despite being on the wrong end of the result during our clash with Liverpool, there were still lots of positives to take and it didn’t dampen my mood.
In fairness, that was mainly due to the magnificence of Enzo Le Fée. Is it possible to be addicted to watching a footballer play? If so, I think I am. How on earth did we have him in the Championship?
Seeing the Lads in action just brings me so much joy — as I am sure it does to us all, and I simply can’t wait for the start of the season and especially the first home game against Fulham. Hopefully some more bright sunshine, seeing some new signings in action and the Stadium of Light in full voice.
After knee surgery in April, I missed out on attending the last few games of the 2025/2026 season.
Not being in the ground for the Chelsea game is something that might always sting, but I couldn’t complain with the result. I think this is a big reason why I’m buzzing so much for the season to begin, as I felt I missed out at the end of the last one.
With that in mind, I’m also hopeful of attending more away games this season.
Being unable to play football isn’t ideal, but it does free up my weekends quite nicely. Coinciding with turning eighteen a month ago, my injury has turned out to have something of a silver lining.
It’ll be easier said than done to acquire tickets and I acknowledge that I’ll have to wait my turn as those that attended for years, travelling up and down the country in League One and beyond, have more than earned their priority.
I’m also aware of the controversy surrounding the away ticket ballot scheme within the new memberships and I feel for those who might be negatively impacted, but in a selfish way, I might be able to benefit, and I feel very fortunate to be a Sunderland supporter in a magnificent period such as this.
On top of all this, we still have the Europa League to come.
The predicted pots doing the rounds on social media have led to a lot of daydreaming and make 28 August feel years away. The idea of watching Sunderland play against the likes of Milan, Marseille, Juventus and Leverkusen is something that I haven’t been able to wrap my head around just yet.
Add to that the prospect of possible away trips to Czechia, Cyprus, Croatia, Belgium and plenty more, and it’s almost unbelievable, but for now, we can only wait, hanging onto the amuse-bouche of pre-season games and transfer rumours.
22 August can’t come quickly enough. Haway the Lads!
