LeBron James has been the biggest storyline in the sports world for nearly a month as his free agency process has taken an unexpected path. At 41 years old, the four-time NBA champion remains one of the biggest names available on the market.

The 23-year NBA veteran continues to be an elite athlete despite being in the later stages of his career. However, a final decision from James may not come until August.

“After projecting a decision from LeBron James this week, many around the NBA now believe this could ultimately be delayed into early August. The final notable wave of free agency will continue to be stalled out until LeBron makes an announcement,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.

There have been rumors that James could be waiting for a specific trade to happen or for a team to make a major signing before making his decision. However, ESPN’s Shams Charania revealed that does not appear to be the case.

“LeBron and rich Paul aren’t waiting for another domino to fall. The entire NBA is waiting on the decision. I feel like we’ve had two separate free agencies. Once LeBron signs Demar Derozan, James Harden will sign after,” Charania said on the Pat McAfee Show.

While James may not have given the impression that he was waiting on a specific move, ESPN’s Vincent Goodwill reported that he was attempting to reunite with Kyrie Irving in Cleveland.

“League sources said James had been angling for former teammate Irving to join him in Cleveland, but the Dallas Mavericks have had no interest in engaging the Cavaliers in a trade, and Irving is believed to be comfortable where he is,” Goodwill wrote.

This is a surprising development in James’ free agency process. The two stars have maintained tremendous respect for each other since their split, but Irving’s departure from Cleveland was not something James was expecting at the time.

A reunion between Irving and James would have been a fascinating ending to their story together. It appears James attempted to make something happen behind the scenes, but the situation quickly failed to develop. Irving remained comfortable in Dallas, leaving James unable to reunite with one of his former favorite teammates.
