Every AFC South team's biggest reason for optimism in 2026

The AFC South can be a fascinating division in the NFL. The Houston Texans have the best defense in the NFL and remain a top contender. The Jacksonville Jaguars are looking to build upon a very good season last year. The Tennessee Titans are looking to take a major leap in all aspects, and the Indianapolis Colts believe they have stability again to be a contender as well.

Let’s break down one of the biggest reasons for optimism heading into the 2026 season for each AFC South franchise.

Houston Texans – C.J. Stroud should return to his rookie form

Not to sugarcoat it, but this is C.J. Stroud’s last season to return to his rookie form and make a deep playoff run. Last season produced a third straight playoff appearance, but for some reason, C.J. Stroud buckled under pressure after receiving a playoff win. He threw four interceptions in his playoff exit, and that cannot happen again. The root cause is said to be the offensive line, which has been addressed, so many believe that the Texans will be just fine this season…We hope.

Jacksonville Jaguars – Travis Hunter will have to be a Hall of Famer to justify the price paid for him

Now, with being seen as a full-time cornerback, Jags’ Travis Hunter can breathe a sigh of relief and concentrate on one playbook. The Jaguars won 13 of 17 games before losing to the Buffalo Bills. They made no veteran additions this offseason and trust the nucleus that they have. The draft was underwhelming in all aspects, but the front office thinks they’re ready now, and with the recent success they’ve had, I think so too. But Travis Hunter better be worth it…

Indianapolis Colts – If nothing else, they’ve been consistent the past three years, and that should continue

Before Daniel Jones‘ Achilles injury in Week 14, he was a borderline MVP candidate. Now, he has been rewarded with a two-year contract for up to $100 million. We will see, I guess… The Colts were running through the AFC last season with Jones at the helm, and this year should be no different once healthy. It will be a Carlie Irsay team as well, as she has taken over as the chief executive. If the Colts aren’t consistent again, a complete overhaul will be in order.

Tennessee Titans – Many believe Robert Saleh will be better in his second stint as head coach

Robert Saleh was 20-36 as head coach of the New York Jets and left them among the most dysfunctional organizations in the NFL. The Titans are hoping not to fall into that category, and honestly shouldn’t. Cam Ward is a bright spot and played at an elite level against the Seahawks, Chiefs, and Jags last season. No team has made more front office and coaching changes than the Titans in the last four years. It must be better now, right? Well… good luck.
