The Georgia Bulldogs play the Oklahoma Sooners at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sept. 26, at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. The Georgia-Oklahoma game will be televised on ESPN.
No. 2 Georgia (3-0, 1-0 SEC) plays No. 24 Oklahoma (2-1, 0-0) in the SEC home opener for the Bulldogs and the first SEC game of the season for Oklahoma. The game matches two teams that are off to very different offensive starts.
Georgia leads the nation in scoring and is averaging 59.3 points per game. Oklahoma is averaging 12 points per game over its past two contests: a 17-10 road loss to Michigan and 14-6 home win over New Mexico.
Despite contrasting offensive performances to begin the year, both teams can rely on their defenses. Oklahoma leads the SEC in scoring defense and is allowing 7.7 points per game. Georgia leads the SEC in total defense at 211.3 yards per game, but Oklahoma is not far behind, averaging 215.3 yards allowed per game. Oklahoma has the SEC’s best pass defense and will try to slow quarterback Gunner Stockton and the explosive Georgia offense.
“We go way back, and he’s probably been one of the premier defensive coaches in all of college football for a long time,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said about Oklahoma coach Brent Venables. “They have a really good football team, and it’s a great matchup.”
Georgia is a two touchdown home favorite against Oklahoma. ESPN’s matchup predictor, which assesses how teams have performed, football power index and other key variables, gives Georgia a 83.4% chance to defeat Oklahoma. The Sooners have a 16.6% chance of pulling off the upset against Georgia. ESPN considers Oklahoma to be Georgia’s most likely home loss for the rest of the regular season.
