ESPN College Basketball Analyst Unexpectedly Dies at 47

Chris Spatola, an Army veteran and ESPN college basketball analyst, died unexpectedly at age 47

He was the son-in-law of legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski and played college basketball at Army before serving in the military

Spatola is survived by his wife Jamie, Coach K’s youngest daughter, and their three children

Longtime ESPN college basketball analyst Chris Spatola has unexpectedly died at age 47, his family and ESPN announced.

Duke and ESPN confirmed in separate statements the death of Spatola on Monday, Sept. 21. He was a former Duke staffer from 2007 to 2012 and the son-in-law of legendary Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski.

“Chris Spatola brought a unique perspective to ESPN’s college basketball coverage, shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster,” began ESPN’s statement shared on X Tuesday, Sept. 22.

“He was thoughtful, prepared and passionate about the sport, earning the respect of colleagues, coaches, players and fans alike. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time,” concluded the statement.

Spatola joined ESPN in 2015, providing analysis during game and studio productions.

Krzyzewski’s family released a statement to the News & Observer on Spatola’s death.

“There are no words to adequately express our heartbreak over the loss of our beloved Chris Spatola. Chris served our country, was a devoted husband and father, and was such an important part of our family,” the statement began.

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, thoughts and prayers we have received during this incredibly difficult time,” it continued. “We respectfully ask for privacy as our entire family, particularly Jamie and her three beautiful children, grieve and process this unimaginable loss.”

Duke Basketball also shared a tribute on X in the wake of Spatola’s unexpected death. They sent love to his family and friends during this tumultuous time.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Chris Spatola. Chris was a beloved Army veteran, coach, broadcaster, and true friend to the Duke Basketball family,” began the tribute uploaded on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Duke’s post continued, “We send our love and condolences to his wife Jamie and three children, the Spatola and Krzyzewski families, and everyone who loved him.”

Spatola was a college basketball analyst for ESPN and SiriusXM for over a decade after playing college basketball at Army, where his father-in-law’s coaching career began. He started all four years and served in the Army after graduating before joining Krzyzewski’s staff.

While Spatola was at Duke, the Blue Devils won the 2010 NCAA championship.

Spatola was also a court coach for gold-medal-winning USA teams at the 2008 Olympics and 2010 FIBA World Championship.

He is survived by his wife Jamie Krzyzewski, the youngest daughter of Krzyzewski, and their three children.
