Former England stars, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have warned Como manager, Cesc Fabregas against accepting the position of Manchester United’s next head coach.
Lineker called the Como manager’s potential move to Old Trafford madness and described Old Trafford as “a graveyard”.
Discussing on The Rest is Football, with Fabregas recently guiding Como to a 4-1 win over United in the Champions League on Wednesday, both men warned the former Arsenal captain to stay away from the Red Devils’ job.
United have recorded just one win in seven Premier League matches and two victories in 11 across all competitions, positioning them in 13th place and without a win in their last six games.
Carrick is expected to oversee Sunday’s home fixture against Bournemouth while the club searches for a potential successor. Some of those being considered include Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann, Antonio Conte, and Fabian Hürzeler.
Fabregas, who helped Como win promotion from Serie B to Serie A and took them to the Champions League, is also being considered for the job.
Shearer said, “Mentioning up-and-coming managers, Cesc Fabregas is the next one on the block.
“I love his attitude, I love how calm he is, how balanced he is and the job he’s doing there is remarkable.”
Lineker acknowledged that a top club would eventually pursue the former Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea midfielder, yet advised him to decline Manchester United’s offer.
He said, “He will face a huge decision eventually if he maintains even modest success with Como [a major club will pursue him].
“It could be Manchester United. Should he accept that position, he would be mad! It is fundamentally a graveyard.”
Shearer added, “While it is undoubtedly a prestigious football club, it is not an appealing opportunity currently, given the number of [managers] who have served there and subsequently been dismissed.
“The only appealing aspect is that he might receive a substantial severance package within 12 to 18 months.”
