If you missed an underrated sci-fi entry in 2025, it is soon coming to streaming.
Sci-fi continues to be a dominant force in the entertainment industry, with shows like Silo, Severance, and Fallout being among the most popular on streaming television, while Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday are set to face off at the box office this December. But we occasionally get compelling standalones like Mickey 17, which is now primed to take over streaming.
Mickey 17 will premiere on Hulu and Disney+ on November 23, three weeks from now. Based on the 2022 novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, the 2025 adaptation was directed by Bong Joon Ho, his first directorial feature since the groundbreaking 2019 multi-Oscar winner Parasite. Bong is also famous for his work on Snowpiercer, The Host, and Okja.
Mickey 17 was not the astounding return fans might have wanted for the director, but it was nonetheless well-reviewed. Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey, who joins a space expedition as an “expendable” to escape loan sharks on Earth. Mickey’s position as an expendable means he is given the most dangerous jobs, as the crew can simply print a copy of him if he dies.
But things get complicated when an eighteenth Mickey is accidentally created while his predecessor is still alive, as the human colony is confronted by the aliens native to the ice planet they have arrived on. Mickey 17 also stars Steven Yeun and Naomi Ackie as Mickey’s peers, Timo and Nasha, as well as Mark Ruffalo and Toni Collette as Kenneth and Ylfa Marshall, the satirical politician in charge of the expedition and his wife.

Mickey 17 garnered a Rotten Tomatoes critical score of 77% against an audience score of 73%. The movie grossed $133.5 million worldwide against a reported budget of $118 million, making it a major flop. In comparison, Parasite grossed $258.5 million worldwide on a budget of only $11 million, making it one of the most profitable movies of the year in addition to the Best Picture winner.
Bong’s next movie is Ally, an animated feature slated for release in 2027. Ally will star Alex Jayne Go as Ally, with a supporting cast including Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Ayo Edebiri, Finn Wolfhard, and Rachel House. In the meantime, moviegoers can check out what is not Bong Joon Ho’s best movie, but still worthy of his impressive filmography.
Mickey 17 will be available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ from November 23, 2026.
