England take on Mexico in the last 16 of the World Cup in what promises to be an electric atmosphere at the iconic Azteca Stadium.

The Azteca Stadium has been the stage for some unforgettable World Cup moments, and its latest chapter will see the confident co-hosts take on England in Mexico City.

Thomas Tuchel’s side must adapt to the well-discussed altitude, with he stadium sitting at over 2,200m (7,220ft) above sea level.

Much has also been discussed pre-game about Mexico’s formidable record at the ground, with their unbeaten run in competitive games stretching 13 years.

El Tri have lost only two competitive games at the Azteca Stadium since it opened in 1966, winning 70 of those 89 games, including three group-stage games at the 2026 World Cup. Mexico have also drawn 17 games.

However, Mexico’s remarkable record is in large part thanks to their dominance of Central and North America football. The continent lacks traditional world football powerhouses, and Mexico’s list of victories in competitive home games showcases this.

The only European teams that Mexico have beaten in a competitive game at the venue are Bulgaria, Belgium (twice), and Czechia, the latter at this summer’s tournament.

Their most high-profile win was a 4-3 success against Brazil in the 1999 Confederations Cup final.
